Greg FenwickOn July 2nd, 2006, at the Patriot Days' awards ceremony, Greg Fenwick became the new town crier for Sackville, Nova Scotia. Northwest Community Council made if official on July 20th at their council meeting. The position had been vacant since the passing of Tom Gray in February of 2003.
While Greg was never a town crier previously, he seems very enthusiastic about this new venture. Many of his friends think he is perfectly suited for the position, while others are not so sure. Since becoming acclaimed to the position he has attended two functions, the first was opening the councillor's tea at Fultz House on July 4th and the second was attending the Natal Day Parade along side Halifax town crier, Peter Cox.
Greg's interest in being a town crier actually stemmed from researching re-enactments on the internet. The snowball really got rolling when he asked a friend whether Sackville had a town crier and then made an offhand comment that he "wouldn't mind being the town crier".
Greg will now go about the task of putting together an official uniform, which will be from the 1770's period. This can be quite costly, so he has been acquiring pieces at a time, working his way towards the full uniform. He will serve as an apprentice town crier for approximately one year at which time the Guild of Town Criers for Nova Scotia will decide whether to accept him into their guild.
Greg was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. His family moved to Ontario when he was five years of age where he was raised and resided until approximately 16 years ago. He has lived in Sackville for the past eight years and prior to that lived eight years in Fall River. Greg lives in Sackville with his wife and they have three children, one daughter and two sons. He is a sales representative for Rothmans Benson & Hedges. His community involvement includes Scouting, which he has been involved with for the past 25 years, as well as numerous activities with his church. In his spare time he also enjoys camping and canoeing. |
