Fultz House Tea-Great Food, Great Company, Great Time

On the morning of Tuesday, July 5th, something extraordinary occurred. My mother and I, having a whole day ahead of us with no urgent business to speak of, decided to attend the Fultz House Tea being held at the Fultz House Museum on the corner of Cobequid and Sackville Drive. Now, this may not seem like a big deal to most people; however, my mother has called Sackville home for almost 30 years and has never once been inside Fultz House. Having been there myself only once, with a Brownie group years ago, I thought going to the Tea would be a great opportunity to see it again- and get us out of the house for the afternoon. It turned out to be so much more than that. My mother and I arrived at Fultz House a little before twelve, and the place was already bustling. I bought our tickets while my mom signed the guest book, and we found seats at a table set up in the dining room along with a mother with two young children and a lovely older couple. The woman who served us was pleasant and very easy to talk to, and wonderful at flagging down both Councillors Bob Harvey and Brad Johns, who had sponsored the event and were busily serving the tea and coffee. There were plates of every kind of sandwich you could wish for, the tea was wonderful, and the sweets just kept coming. Our volunteer hostess kept everyone's cups and plates filled and provided wonderful conversation; although she told us it was her first time volunteering at Fultz House, you'd never have known it. Both councillors made time to stop in and chat for a few minutes on their way by, and Councillor Brad Johns cheerfully handed out happy face pins to our table when he came around to refill the coffee cups. After thanking our excellent hostess and finishing our tea, my mother and I went about exploring the rest of the museum. The amount of artifacts and the work that must have gone into their careful display and upkeep astounded us. I had never known how much history Sackville has, or how much I have to be proud of in my community, until I took the time to go walk through the Fultz House Museum. As we were walking along the Charles Fenerty Nature Path on the grounds of the museum, my mother commented that although she's driven by Fultz House many times during the years she's lived in Sackville, it was a shame it took her so long to actually come and see it. It is a shame that the residents of our community so often overlook such a wonderful piece of our history, though we pass by it almost every day. The Fultz House Teas are held every Tuesday from noon ‘til 2 p.m., from July to September, and volunteer groups in our community host them. It's $4.00 a person for all the sandwiches, tea, and sweets you can eat, wonderful company, and a chance to learn about Sackville's history- now if that's not extraordinary, I don't know what is! Next week's tea will be hosted by the Sackville Lionesses, and I know for a fact that there will be strawberry shortcakes for dessert, so I encourage everyone to go; I know I'll be first in line! See you there.
